How to Measure Your AI Citation Rate
If you're investing in a GEO strategy, the first question is always: how do I know if it's working? The good news is that AI citation rate is measurable — and the manual method is simpler than you might think.
What is AI citation rate?
AI citation rate measures the percentage of relevant queries for which an AI search engine surfaces your brand name, product, or content in its generated answer.
Formula: AI citation rate = (queries with citation / total queries tested) × 100
For example, if your brand appears in 6 out of 20 tested queries, your citation rate is 30%.
Step 1: Build your query list
Create a list of 15–25 questions your ideal customers type into AI engines. Include:
- General industry questions ("best GEO agency in Hungary")
- Problem-focused questions ("how do I appear in ChatGPT answers")
- Comparison questions ("GEO vs SEO which should I choose")
- Local intent questions ("AI visibility audit Budapest")
This query list is your baseline test set. Run the same questions every month so results are comparable over time.
Step 2: Run tests manually
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — preferably in incognito mode or a fresh browser profile to avoid personalized results.
For each query:
- Enter the question into the AI engine
- Read the generated answer
- Note: does your brand name, website, or content appear?
- If yes: which engine, and in what context?
Step 3: Log results in a spreadsheet
Create a simple Google Sheet with these columns:
- Query text
- ChatGPT — cited? (yes/no)
- Perplexity — cited? (yes/no)
- Google AI Overviews — cited? (yes/no)
- Notes (how it appeared)
- Date
Fill this in monthly. The aggregate citation rate over time is your GEO strategy's performance indicator.
What counts as a good citation rate?
Good is relative, but general benchmarks:
- 0–5%: baseline, no meaningful AI presence
- 5–20%: early stage, optimization beginning to work
- 20–40%: strong GEO performance, brand is a recognized source
- 40%+: category-leading position in AI answers
How often should you measure?
Once a month is enough for formal measurement. After a content launch or major change, run the test one week later to capture the direct impact. Don't measure daily — AI answers vary, and short time windows introduce noise that skews the data.
Frequently Asked Questions
AI citation rate measures the percentage of relevant queries for which an AI engine surfaces your brand name, product, or content in its generated answer. It's the primary KPI for GEO.
Once a month is sufficient for formal measurement. After a content launch, run the test one week later to track the direct impact.
For new brands, 5–15% is already a positive signal. Industry-leading brands achieve 30–60% on their most important queries. The goal is the monthly growth trend, not an absolute number.
Partially. Scripts using the OpenAI API and Perplexity API can automate queries and check for text matches. Full automation is difficult because AI answers are non-deterministic.
