Structured Data and GEO: Why They Matter
For a long time, schema.org JSON-LD markup was an obscure corner of the SEO toolkit. In the GEO era, it has become strategically critical: AI engines rely on exactly these signals to interpret content and identify it as a trustworthy source.
What is structured data?
Structured data is machine-readable code embedded in a page — typically in JSON-LD format inside the page head — so that search engines and AI engines can precisely understand the page's content, author, type, and context.
For example, a FAQPage schema tells the AI: "this page contains question-answer pairs, and they're right here." This dramatically lowers the AI's effort to cite you.
The most important schema types for GEO
FAQPage — The most critical schema for GEO. Marks up question-answer pairs in machine-readable format. Directly linked to Google AI Overviews inclusion and featured snippets.
Article — For blog posts and guides. Includes author, publication date, description, and main topic. Raises the content's E-E-A-T score.
Person — Tags the author or expert's data: name, expertise, employer, URL. One of the strongest E-E-A-T signals for AI engines.
Organization — Structures company data (name, URL, contact, specialty). AI engines use this to identify the entity behind the content.
Service — For service pages. Includes service name, description, provider, and pricing model.
HowTo — Ideal for step-by-step guides. AI engines frequently cite HowTo-marked pages for "how do I" type queries.
How to add JSON-LD schema to a page
Embed JSON-LD in this format inside the page's <head>:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "What is GEO?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "GEO is the practice of creating content that AI engines cite."
}
}]
}
</script>
Validation and checking
Always validate after implementing a schema. Two free tools:
- Google Rich Results Test — shows which rich result types are activated
- Schema.org validator — flags technical errors
The most common errors: missing required fields, incorrect JSON syntax, or a mismatch between schema content and visible page content.
An important caveat
Structured data doesn't guarantee AI citation. It helps AI engines understand the content, but the citation ultimately depends on content quality and relevance. Schema is the foundation — without good content, it isn't sufficient on its own.
Frequently Asked Questions
Schema markup is machine-readable code embedded in a page in JSON-LD format so that search engines and AI engines can precisely understand the page's content, author, and context.
For GEO: FAQPage (most critical), Article, Person, Organization, Service, and HowTo. FAQPage has a direct relationship with AI Overviews and featured snippet placements.
Not directly — but they increase the probability. They help AI engines understand the content, which is especially effective for Google AI Overviews and Bing Copilot.
Two free tools: Google Rich Results Test and Schema.org validator. Paste your JSON-LD code or enter the page URL into either tool.
